Starry Night at Lake Bettmersee

High above the Rhone Valley, at 2,009 meters, Lake Bettmersee lies like a dark mirror in the stillness of the night. This photograph was taken just before midnight on Bettmeralp in the Aletsch region, Valais, Switzerland — a sky full of stars stretches above the still water, while the moon, seven days short of full, bathes the scene in soft, silvery light. Its glow brushes the wooden swim platform reaching lonely out into the dark water, gently drawing it out of the shadows. On the horizon, the jagged silhouettes of Albrunhorn (2,885 m), Grosses Schirnhorn (2,939 m), Mittelberg (2,891 m), and Breithorn (2,599 m) form a backdrop of shadow against the sky. In the foreground, boulders rest along the shore, likewise touched by moonlight. This image captures that rare moment when the Swiss Alps reveal their full nocturnal magic — far from artificial light, in quiet harmony with moon and stars.
